Dive 1: Atami – Tug Boat

Thomas, Eriko, Julie and I descend on the Asahi 16 gou wreck, but quickly moved off the wreck in search of deeper water. We had an expensive 21/35 trimix fill and we wanted to make the best of it! Thomas and Eriko, our resident GUE instructors and experts in Atami navigation, led the way. We ventured over the Atami’s deeper reef and at one point spotted 6 rays. 24 minutes in we reached our main destination, one of the tug boats brought down in the sinking of theAsahi 16 gou. We took a few photos for a new Project Baseline station and measured the visibility using a Secchi disk – a very interesting and precise way of measuring visibility. After recording our findings in our wetnotes, Julie and I deco’ed on the reef while Thomas and Eriko continued their dive (must be nice to have a CCR).

Max depth: 44m
Duration: 60 min
Station Visibility: 15m
Station Temp: 23°C

Dive 2: Atami – Asahi 16 gou

Julie and I ventured down to the Asahi 16 gou wreck for the sole purpose of collected the data necessary for our first Project Baseline site, the bow of the Asahi 16 gou. Again, we used the Secchi disk to measure visibility and took a few pictures. We aimed to take a few extra pictures so that we could better show divers new to Project Baseline how to use the Secchi disk and how to take the picture for the database.

Max depth: 30m
Duration: 60 min
Station Visibility: 18m
Station Temp: 22°C

Dive 3: Osezaki – ??

After an exciting evening in Numazu hosted by Thomas and Eriko, Julie and I headed to Osezaki with some trimix in the rental car. Our plan was to enter at Centro and head out to sea until reaching a depth of 45m, turn back towards the shore and find a spot for a new PB project. We found a wonderful site on our 6m deco stop, however the currents were challenging and we were nowhere near our entry point (luckily we were just next to a different entry point). Visibility was recorded and pictures were taken. We hope to have the new PB Osezaki online soon!

Max depth: 47m
Duration: 74 min
Station Visibility: 18m
Station Temp: 22°C

Overall, it was a fantastic and very productive weekend. We’d love to have you join us next time! Please remember, while we did some trimix dives this weekend, all of our sites are in recreational limits.
